The work site location will encompass the north side of the area as shown on the map above. Work will be carried out using the roadway with a partial lane closure, and staff will be available to assist drivers as required. We would encourage you to avoid that area while crews are on site but vehicle movement in/out of the parking areas will not be obstructed. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated as we work together to enhance historic downtown Newmarket.

  • When: January 2 to 31, 2024
  • General Working Hours: Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NT Power is committed to delivering safe and reliable electricity to our customers. As part of our commitment to maintain reliable electricity, we have ongoing maintenance and capital project plans to replace infrastructure that is coming near the end of its useful life.

The infrastructure relocation project on Cedar St. has been ongoing for some time, and the current phase involves the removal of overhead lines, and installation of new underground lines. High voltage equipment in the area will also be replaced, old equipment removed, and equipment installed at customer buildings. Some civil work will be involved including minor excavations and a temporary power supply.

What To Expect
  • Due to the nature of the work, there will be construction-related noise and dust from the equipment and trucks, though every effort to minimize this will be made.
  • There will be brief intermittent power interruptions required to complete this work for which you will be notified in advance. If for any reason extended outages are required, extended notification lead time will be given. NT Power will make every effort to reduce the frequency and duration of outages in completing this work, including completing outages overnight.
  • Access to the roadway will be temporarily closed for short durations, but all deliveries and garbage/recycling collection will not be impacted. Please see maps.
  • Every effort will be made to minimize disruptions as much as possible. When the work is complete, any disturbances to property or roadways will be fully restored to "as good or better" condition.

This work is important and will help decrease power outages caused by inclement weather such as ice storms, freezing rain, and snow events while continuing to revitalize Newmarket’s award-winning Main Street. The installation of heritage lights will occur later in 2024 and is not part of this work phase.

The Town of Newmarket and NT Power are working together to ensure minimal disruption to businesses, residents, and visitors to downtown Newmarket. Please see below for more information about the work schedule, closures, and a map of the work area.
